Hoopla Update
Dear Reader,
Due to budget constraints, the Burlington Public Library Board of Trustees along with library leadership will have to lower the monthly checkout limits in Hoopla effective February 1st. We will be going down from six (6) items a month to two (2). This was not an easy decision to come to, but due to several factors including limited funding, increasing costs, and unfair vendor contracts we have been forced to do this in order to make ends meet for this fiscal year (July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2025).
The Library Board will be keeping a close eye on Hoopla use statistics in addition to advocating for a larger budget locally and working with legislators to champion fair e-content contracts for libraries. We will be revisiting Hoopla terms at the May and June board meetings and will make a decision at that time on monthly limits for fiscal year 2026 (July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026).
Hoopla is a fabulous resource that has become beloved in this community with a large collection and no wait times. If you would like to advocate for stronger Hoopla limits at the Burlington Public Library, please feel free to contact me at the email address listed bleow and share your story. If you would like to learn more about library purchase contracts for e-content, check out this article: High Price of Digital Content Forces Tough Choices at Libraries
We will continue to monitor this situation and work so that the Burlington Public Library will remain a relevant and rich resource for the community. Our other digital collection, available on the Libby app, is available and can be accessed for free with your library card: https://libbyapp.com/library/bridges
